3/14/03 - Lawrence, KS - The Granada Theater

A review by Kenneth Zerkel - the_benjamin_gate@hotmail.com
I got to the Granada at about 4:30 and there were only about 6 people in line, so I knew I would get a good place when the show started.
When the doors opened I made my way to the stage and got front row center. We waited and waited for the opening act to do his thing. Then the checkered-suited Har Mar Superstar came on stage. While the almost naked Har Mar Superstar did his set you could see Sara and Kelly off stage bobbing their heads to the funky beats. Finally, Har Mar finished and after about 30 minutes the band came on stage.
Then they started Disconnected and the Princess herself ran on stage and started singing. After a few songs, and a few skirt lifts she said "I wrote this song when I found out my mum had cancer. But she's ok now!" and they started an unexpected More Than Life Itself. She also played Come Dig Me Out, Contradiction, Coolhead, Right Here, Shut Up, On the Run, On Your Own, Too Much of You (with the infamous two fingers or fist), and a few new covers. Then she started pointing at a few people and told them to come on stage and then Sara came out on a boa leash held by a drag queen. I knew what this meant and I knew I wouldn't be picked. Then the guy that took Jack to Dawson's Creek on the show told me "Hey you want to go up? You've been standing here a long time." And I said "OH YA!" They dragged me on stage and the drums did the opening to Papa Don't Preach. Kelly ran around the stage brushing by me, it was awesome! I did a rousing rendition of the robot and rocked out.
After the show the hurried everyone out who didn't have an after show pass. Me and my friends got in the huge herd. I finally got up to her and was really nervous. Then I handed her my cd book and she looked at it and said "You're from Kentucky?" (it said thanx Kennett from Alicia) and then realized it was my name and apologized and laughed and said she saw us in the front. I've been to a lot of concerts and this one was one of the most enrgetic, exciting, and eventful show I've even been to. Kelly is here to stay.
