3/21/03 - Detroit, MI - Saint Andrews Hall

A review by Nina Jenzen - jenzenni@msu.edu
The moment had finally arrived; I was standing in line to see Kelly Osbourne at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit, Michigan. Of course it would have to rain today. But being a die-hard fan I still wanted to arrive at St. Andrew's Hall two hours before the door open. I was the 11th person in line and I know this because I was sure to count how many people I would have to push out of the way when it came to getting inside. As I was standing outside with my dear friend Mel I would see Kelly's band members come and go. I took some pictures with Alicia her drummer and Josh her bass guitarist and Sara Kelly's friend. All of a sudden I saw a group of people coming from one of the tour buses. A midst the group was a blonde girl and all of sudden my breath was taken away. It was Kelly Osbourne. I hurried and shouted, "There she is!" Everyone looked at me and then I said, "There is Kelly Osbourne!" There was a mad rush to get her autograph. Sure enough right before she came out I had put my camera inside my car (because no cameras were allowed inside). So I did not get any pictures, but I did get an autograph.

It was finally 6:30 and the doors opened, I hurried and got inside so that I could purchase another CD to meet and greet Kelly after the show. The CD was $16 and with the CD I was also given some pins of Lola and The Osbournes. There was also other merchandise that you could purchase. I bought a shirt that was $20 (all of her shirts were $20). Some other merchandise included a trucker hat and a wristband.

After collecting all of the things I bought I made my way to the stage. Earlier when I was standing outside in line I met some 15 year old girls, they were nice enough to save a place in front for me. I was off to the right of the stage but it ended up being a really good spot to be in. Har Mar Superstar came on at 7:00 and I was really not that impressed. He actually reminded me of a squirrel. His hair was short but in the back there were long pieces of hair, it just really reminded me of a tail. After every song he would tell us that he was the "fucking best singer in the world." Everyone who I was with thought who is he kidding. During his performance he stripped all the way down to his underwear and we were glad that was where he stopped. Everyone except a couple of his fans in the audience were telling him to get off the stage. He also came down into the audience but everyone hurried and moved away from him because he was all sweaty. Finally he was done and it was getting to the moment I had been waiting for since Kelly announced her tour.

Some of Kelly's sound and stage guys came on to prep the stage for her; it was about 7:30. Ten minutes later after seeing her band members congregating backstage I decided (along with the other Kelly fans I had met) to start chanting "Kelly." The whole audience joined in and it was pretty exciting. A couple of minutes later Kelly's band was all setup on stage and then the light went dim and then she ran out on stage. The first song she sang was "Disconnected," everyone was singing along with her. I forgot the song line up, just because I was too overwhelmed that I was there and this day had finally come. Kelly had a black tee shirt and black capri pants on with Nike shoes. Over her shirt was a pink zip up jacket (which in the lights sometimes turned purple). She did not have a lot of makeup on just pink eye shadow. Before the second song she poured water over her head and then poured the rest of the water on the audience. Kelly sang a new song called "Heartbroken" (I think?) and it was a really good song. At one point I was singing a long with one of her songs and she looked over and smiled. In the middle of the show she told us a story on how she went to the mall and her security guards were not around her and a guy pulled a gun on her. Then she asked the audience if anyone had a story and a girl was pulled up on stage and she told us a story on how she was hit last night in a parking lot by a guy. After that she sang another song. She did sing a cover song called "When I wear my sunglasses at night" and she told the audience if they had their sunglasses to put them on. It was nearing the end of the show and she sang "Papa Don't Preach" she picked people out of audience to go up and sing with her. Of course I was not picked but it was exciting to see the girls that were next me go up there. Sara also was up there a long with other friends of Kelly's. Kelly announced during the show that it was Sara's birthday, so everyone wished her a happy birthday. Then the lights went up and the show was done.

Security then kicked out everyone who did not have a pass and then the people who did were told to get in a line. Soon after Kelly came back out and did the meet and greet. Pretty soon it was my turn and I had her sign a poster that I had taken down from the wall in St. Andrew's Hall. I also gave her a hug and then I went outside to meet my friend who did not get a pass. Both of us waited outside for Kelly because that night after the show she was going to go and party at "Space" a nightclub that is right next door to St. Andrew's Hall. Mel and I waited outside right in front for an hour and then we heard rumors that she was going to go out the back door. Mel and I went to the back and were the only one's besides a 12 year old and her aunt that were back there. All of a sudden I saw some people by the back door so I told Mel to get the camera and get ready. I was so excited this was my time to get a picture. Kelly stepped out of the door with a bunch of her body guards and were walking to "Space" so I asked for a picture with her and her body guards told me "no," but Kelly said, "sure." I was the only one to get a picture with her. It was a great ending to a perfect night.

Kelly's show was energy intense and at times it looked like Kelly was really tired. Most of the time during the show you could not hear her over the guitar and drums. But I had a great time and I would recommend anyone to go and see the show.
